This beautiful oil on canvas painting represents a rare and highly compelling example of 19th-century American Orientalist art by the elusive genre and landscape painter A. J. Horsford. Although Horsford is primarily associated with intimate Western genre scenes and atmospheric coastal landscapes, the present work reveals a refined and little-known exploration of Near Eastern imagery, strongly informed by the influence of celebrated French Orientalist painters such as Charles-Théodore Frère and Eugène Fromentin.
