Painted in 1969, this exceptionally dynamic oil on canvas by Thai artist Sujarit Hirankul captures a vivid riverside village scene in what was historically known as Siam, today Thailand. Executed when the artist was still remarkably young, the painting demonstrates an already confident command of composition, color, texture, and movement.
The composition is dominated by a group of traditional houses constructed along the water’s edge, their dramatically pitched roofs rendered in warm ochre, golden yellow, terracotta, and earthy brown. These architectural forms contrast beautifully with the cooler blues and blue-greens of the surrounding landscape and water. Small boats, vegetation, figures, ladders, poles, and the complex structure of the dwellings animate the scene, creating an extraordinary sense of everyday village life.
Particularly striking is Hirankul’s vigorous handling of the paint. Broad, spontaneous strokes are combined with areas of substantial impasto, giving the surface an almost sculptural quality. Rather than approaching the subject as a precise topographical record, the artist transforms the village through an expressive and distinctly modern painterly vocabulary. Details emerge and dissolve within the energetic brushwork, allowing the viewer to experience both the recognizable landscape and the physicality of the paint itself.
The sophisticated composition is constructed through a dense network of verticals, diagonals, and sweeping lines. The slender poles and branches crossing the scene provide rhythm and movement, while the monumental golden roofs anchor the center of the painting. Reflections and loosely articulated forms along the lower edge reinforce the impression of a settlement intimately connected to the water.
The work is especially appealing for its combination of traditional Thai subject matter and modern expressionist technique. Painted in 1969 and retaining its handsome original frame, it offers both considerable decorative presence and a fascinating glimpse into Hirankul’s interpretation of Thailand during the late 1960s.
Signed and dated on the front and additionally countersigned and dated on the reverse, this colorful and highly textured village scene is a particularly attractive example of Sujarit Hirankul’s work.
